Many shelter staff members across the country say that dogs who have a long-term shelter stay usually develop several mental and emotional traumas. Some become aggressive, while others can be reclusive. Some dogs though may take matters into their own hands and reach out to find a home that would take them in.
Speck
Desiray Miracle-Wilder, the director at the Bullock County Humane Society., a rescue organization that acts as animal control in Bullock County, Alabama, said that Speck spent more than 18 months with them. The two-year-old Border Collie was only a pup when he came in.
Desiray added that the puppy got along fine with all the dogs and cats under their care. And the sweet dog simply adores humans. He craves attention from them and seeks out love. He is such a lovable dog that they wondered why no one was adopting him. And yet, the dog patiently waited.
A new chapter in his life was sparked by a video of him that went viral.
It all started when Desiray was doing her daily routine one day. She was going around the shelter checking up on their rescues and cleaning out kennels. When she was near Speck’s area she noticed the dog going to the gate and squeezing himself through the bars, He then reached out one paw trying to catch her attention.
By this time, Desiray started recording. She also reached out to Speck, who then placed his paw on her arms. He was trying to wrap his paw on her wrist and kept holding on; it was as if Speck never wanted to let go. The loving dog was wagging his tail while at the same time, pushing his head through the bars, trying hard to get closer to her.
A new home
When the video was posted, people fell instantly in love with the dog. A family from out of state quickly adopted him. Speck will now be living on a spacious farm where two rescued dogs await him. Not only that, some of the other dogs got adopted too, and the shelter received a lot of food donations.
