At 81 years old, Ray Overall is still being recognized for his heroic deeds. He and his 14-year-old dog, Max, was honored by the Novi Police and Fire Department with the “Life Saver” Award. This is for saving their neighbor’s life at the Brookdale Senior Living Facility in Novi, Michigan.
Ray was watching TV one night and drifted to sleep. But around 1 am, Max’s barking awakened him. Groggily, Ray scolded Max and told him to stop. Usually, Max would listen to his dad, but that night, Max needed to tell Ray something important. The incessant dog kept on barking, prompting Ray to wake up fully. He turned off the TV and focused his attention on his dog. But then he heard a loud thumping above him and the faint muffled cries from a woman.
The quick-thinking former fireman realized that her upstairs neighbor must have gotten into an accident. So Ray immediately called the Novi Fire Department for help. In no time, rescuers were in the senior facility taking the injured 87-year-old woman to the hospital. They learned later on from the doctors that had the woman waited till morning to be rescued; she probably would not have survived. Thanks to the two, the senior woman survived the ordeal, and in just a few days, was sent back to her home.
Local news teams got wind of the story and featured it on the news. The two became an instant celebrity, and their story has even gone viral for a time. Ray said that it was just fortunate that he woke up, and his dog Max was persistent in letting him know that something was wrong. He credits his beloved pet for saving the woman’s life.
Nevertheless, both of them were honored for their heroic act, and Max even got a basket of customized treats.
