Bella and George have created a lasting success story together. Bella found George thanks to the non-profit Service Dog Project https://www.servicedogproject.org/. George literally changed her life.
Bella needed crutches by the age of ten and was told that she’d soon be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Medical experts believed she would never be able to ride a bike or swim.
Bella means beautiful and George is a Great Dane. The make of a great team. They first met when Bella was volunteering at the Service Dog Project farm in Massachusetts. The Service Dog Project trains dogs especially to help the mobility impaired.
Bella and George have been on multiple TV shows, news channels and starring in documentaries. Videos about them have gone viral. George has even received awards for his exceptional support to Bella.
Bella’s and George’s breakthrough also gives hope to other children afflicted with Morquio syndrome. This condition is a rare, inherited birth disorder of progressive muscle wasting which severely limits mobility. It can damage a child’s physical capabilities, cause enlarged organs, scoliosis, a heart murmur, and breathing problems and potentially lead to early death.
Dogs Are Amazing
Their story also underscores the amazing potential of dogs. Dogs have kindness, generosity and intelligence to their nature that make them perfect natural therapists. George was part of a professional team training puppies to become service dogs that can have an exceptional impact on the life quality of a human.
This outcome was far from predictable from the outset. Bella’s courage and perseverance as well as that of her parents matched with George’s fine-tuned skills, good nature and charm certainly had a lot to do with it. But there were several steps before the two of them got matched.
Bella said she is an animal person and liked all of the dogs at the farm. But none of them really seemed to liked her. She thought it was because of her high-pitched voice.
At first George ran away and then slowly after a while he just stayed. Bella would brush him and at one point George just wouldn’t let her leave.
George Chose Bella
After a while George was the only dog who would stay in his kennel when Bella entered. She recounts: ‘Like he’d either block the door or try to sit on my lap so that I couldn’t leave’. They started to take him home for weekends to have fun together and George got to know the family. And so he became eventually Bella’s doggy. He chose her. But Bella also chose George.
Little did Bella know how her life would change so drastically from this relationship. It also made life simpler for the family. Later, when interviewed in the media, she would say that it was George’s loyalty that was the most precious thing for her.
George By Bella’s Side 24/24
Bella recalls: “I had wheelchairs, walkers, Canadian crutches, regular crutches, and then we got George and I dropped my crutches and started to use him”. Bella had been told she’ll never ride a bike and she was determined to get on a two-wheeler and ride a bike.
In the beginning Bella’s mother was apprehensive that tiny Bella would not be able to control the Great Dane, 130 lb. But George seemed to have a fine-tuning and protectiveness to him that allowed him to stop or go when Bella needed it. George went everywhere with her — including school. He knew what to do, including where her classes took place. They had become inseparable. They slept in a Bella’s big bed together.
Bella’s doctors were surprised by how her legs improved along with her mental outlook. Within a year she was walking. And from then on she gradually learned running, biking, swimming, kicking, diving, doing flips and take part in activities she otherwise would not have been able to do.
George had helped her gain confidence, independence and happiness. Bella’s Mom Rachel says:
‘The strength she has with George now, her ability to just be a kid, is awesome. She likes to prove everyone wrong and do things she’s told she’ll never do.’
Forging On In Life Together
That’s why people fall in love and get happily married, to achieve what Bella and George have together. Unconditional love and support forging on in life together, while having fun.
George gave Bella what no doctor nor tool could do, the inspiration and belief she could push on in her young life and get more out of it. Georges made difficult things doable, fun and loving for Bella from the start and onward. Watch how far they’ve come together.
